WINDS

Wide range of seasonal wind patterns were recognized by local fishing communities. The Padinjaran Kaattu / Western Wind is prominent during the Southwest Monsoon, typically from mid-May to mid-September, corresponding to the Malayalam months of Edavam to Chingam. This wind brings heavy rainfall and is closely associated with the main monsoon season in Kerala. 'Idavapathi' refers to the Southwest Monsoon. During this period, the sea often turns rough. Thekkan Kattu occurs from Edavam to Midhunam (mid-May to mid-July), which is known to increase sea turbulence and strengthen currents. In contrast, the Kizhakkan Kaattu / Eastern Wind becomes prominent during the post-monsoon period, usually between mid-October and mid-December, covering the Malayalam months of Thulam to Vrischikam. These winds are generally drier. Fishers say “kanniveyilil kadalum vattum”, which means During the scorching summer in the Malayalam month Kanni, which is between mid-September and mid-October, even the sea can dry up. Kannimundan in Kanni (mid-September to mid-October) represents a wind during that time. At the end of this month the north-east monsoon will come, which is known as thulavarsham. Thulavaada, a wind pattern that occurs in Thulam (mid-October to mid-November), is characterized by winds moving from south to north. Vaadakattu and Kachaankaattu, observed during Meenam, Medam, and Edavam (mid-March to mid-May), involve winds moving from north to south, with Medam (mid-April to mid-May) seeing the strongest wind activity. Vadakachaan, or Kumbhakachaan, the winds that occur in Kumbam (mid-February to mid-March), blow from the northwest toward the south, and there is a wind called 'pollamaanthi' where the wind blows by erupting the sand. Vrishchikakattu during Vrishchikam (mid-November to mid-December) contributes to poor fishing for traditional fishers. Overall, this type of textured classification of wind types reflects traditional understanding of seasonal and directional wind patterns, which are essential for predicting the behavior of the ocean and guiding safe fishing along the coast.
